The border surrounding the main map illustrates events in the history of the United States. This detail from the lower border features events in the late 19th and early 20th centuries: the trancontinental railroad, the Indian Wars, the Wright Brothers' flight, and the 16th Amendment to the Constitution (which brought in the income tax).

The illustrations are linked to places you can visit in the Washington DC area. For example, the Wright Brothers' flight is linked to the National Air and Space Museum, where their airplane is on display.
